Synthetic biology encompasses a vast array of research, from creating artificial life to engineering microbes, in order to produce medicines or fuels. Throughout it all, chemistry plays a prominent part. This book reviews the emerging field of synthetic biology in an interdisciplinary manner. The current status of the field is discussed, illustrating a quantitative approach to design which exemplifies and builds novel biological arrangements to carry out unique tasks with a chemical and engineering approach to biological systems.
