Synopsis:
Handbook of Augmentative and Alternative Communication is an introductory how-to text for training students or individuals who are new to the AAC process. Comprised of approximately six chapters, the content is at an introductory level consisting of: (a) the history and background of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), (b) the AAC assessment process (steps and procedures), (c) the funding process/streams for obtaining an AAC system, (d) the steps of treatment/therapy/intervention for AAC to include goals and outcomes, (e) an overview of laws, rules, and regulations governing AAC assessment and delivery of services, and (f) resources to include templates, websites, textbooks, etc. that are useful in developing expertise in the area of AAC. Case examples on DVD are included for use in the assessment and treatment steps of AAC.. Many speech-language pathologists-as well as individuals in related professions such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, special education, etc.-periodically need to do an assessment, or develop a therapy plan, or access funding for AAC systems/devices, yet have little or sporadic experience in this extremely specialized field. With this in mind, Dr. Higdon has produced a new book that provides the introductory steps to allow an individual to assess and begin treatment with someone who needs AAC for the first time or is in need of an upgraded system because of his or her communication progress. Readers will be able to open to the first page and begin the steps of an assessment or find the resources for funding a device. Dr. Higdon is uniquely qualified to write this book. She brings to bear over over twenty-five years of experience in the area of AAC, including a time as Chair of the ASHA Special Interest Division in AAC. Dr. Higdon's vision is that the book will meet the need for this type of text with the basics, as well as quick access to other resources. The result is an eminently accessibl
