Synopsis:
Discoveries in neurobiology, fascial studies, haptic design, psychology and counseling are making advances that are revolutionizing our understanding of body-mind relationships. Manual therapists need a resource that presents interdisciplinary findings in a format that they can understand and apply with clients. With the intention of creating clear boundaries, most mental health professionals are trained to refrain from touch. While these motivations are understandable, this has lead to a significant gap in the way we help people grow and heal. Yet, research is continuing to show how our physical bodies and sensation is intricately linked to how we think and feel. Manual and movement therapists are in a unique position to address this gap with work that is more integrative and speaks to the whole individual. The book discusses how we get stuck in life and how bodywork can help us function better. It talks about how associations created as children, create neural connections that forever affect the way we interpret our surroundings. We see the affects in all the "physical metaphors" we use unconsciously. Even for those of us who speak different languages, there tend to be primary connections - when we think about the future, we tend to lean forward, for example. Athletes who have been blind since birth, use the same body language as sighted athletes when they win (they raise their arms and expose their chests).
