Synopsis:
The use of standards, competencies, the requirements for primary and specialty certification are necessary to delineate practice. This document describes the explicit intellectual, interpersonal, technical, and moral competencies necessary for quality palliative nursing. These competencies are outcome-specific and measurable. In this edition, the definition of competency has been adapted from Competencies for the Hospice and Palliative Advanced Practice Nurse. This definition reflects and provides synergy of several guiding tenets for the nurse in hospice and palliative care as established by: Covering all the major topics and issues, including: - Current practice, - Behavioral expectations as outlined by the Hospice and Palliative - Nurses Credentialing Center (HPCC) hospice and palliative registered nurse certification, - Knowledge expectations for the registered nurse (RN) emerging from the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association's Core Curriculum for the Hospice and Palliative Registered Nurse, and - The 2013 National Consensus Project (NCP) Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care.
