Synopsis:
This book presents a new perspective on the development of theory of mind based on an integration of empirical research that has been conducted on autism and William's syndrome. Autism has long been viewed as a neurodevelopmental disorder in which theory of mind is selectively impaired. On the surface, William's syndrome, another genetically-based neorodevelopmental disorder, appears to be the mirror image of autism. Unlike autistics, people with William's syndrome are friendly, interested in people, remember faces, and seem socially precocious. This may indicate that in William's syndrome, theory of mind is selectively spared. This book explores the research and theory addressing the view that autism and William's syndrome may exemplify opposite profiles in theory of mind. Tager-Flusberg presents a new componential account of social cognition and theory of mind within a developmental framework.
